Vermont Businesses May Qualify for Unemployment Insurance Tax Relief

The Vermont Legislature recently passed legislation to provide partial State Unemployment Tax Act (SUTA) relief to Vermont employers impacted by the federally-declared disasters of 2011:  the April and May flooding events, and Hurricane Irene in August.

Fourteen counties were cited in the federal disaster declaration(s): Addison, Bennington, Caledonia, Chittenden, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, Orange, Orleans, Rutland, Washington, Windham, and Windsor Counties.

If any of these disasters resulted in employee layoffs, the legislation provides up to eight weeks of SUTA Tax relief to the Employer’s UI Tax Rate, but only if the layoffs were directly related to, and immediately following, a disaster.
