Law Update: New York State Paid Family Leave

Attention New York Employers:
New York Paid Family Leave Update

In 2016, New York State passed a Paid Family Leave (PFL) law that provides partial income replacement and job protection while workers are on leave for covered reasons.

Starting January 1, 2018, the New York State Paid Family Leave Program will provide New Yorkers job-protected, paid leave to bond with a new child, care for a loved one with a serious health condition, or to help relieve family pressures when someone is called to active military service.

Employers are required to purchase a PFL insurance policy or self-insure. The income replacement will be fully funded by mandatory employee payroll deductions. Beginning July 1, 2017, an employer is permitted, but not required, to collect the employee contribution for paid family leave coverage beginning on January 1, 2018.
